Student Advising    

Annual Advisement Appointments will continue taking place through spring quarter for all BFA students. Appointments with Major Advisor, Sara Frantz, can be made via Bookings.    

Additionally, our Dept. Chair’s office hours are Wednesdays: 11am -12pm and Thursdays: 12 -1pm. To schedule an appointment email artdesign@calpoly.edu or reach out to Sara Frantz directly (sjfrantz@calpoly.edu). Drop-In appointments are also welcome.

.RAW Journal of Art and Design is now taking submissions for the 2024 Spring Issue! Submissions are FREE. All art mediums and all concentrations can enter. The Spring 2024 issue will be printed and published digitally!

Student Submissions Requested for The Roundup Daily E-Newsletter

The Roundup is Mustang News’ daily e-newsletter used to promote the latest Mustang News and KCPR headlines. Starting last quarter, we introduced a student spotlight section in our Friday newsletters, allowing students to showcase any creative works, including digital art, comics, photographs, poems, etc. to the student body.

Social Justice Film Festival

Tuesday, April 23, 4PM in the ATL (building 07) - Poor Things accompanied by commentary from Dr. Christina Kaviani from COMS and WGQS.

Wednesday, April 24, 5PM in the ATL (building 07) - Victim/Suspect accompanied by commentary from investigative journalist Rachel De Leon who is featured in the film.


2024 Design Competition Now Open

We are thrilled to announce the opening of our prestigious 2024 Design competition here at Communication Arts!

The winning entries, featured in our beautiful Design Annual, garner recognition from our expansive international audience of over 30,000 individuals, many of whom are leading creatives actively seeking fresh professional connections. Moreover, inclusion in Communication Arts magazine grants your work a place among the illustrious archive of visual communications excellence spanning over 65 years.

The CSU Media Arts Festival is now accepting submissions for the 2024 competition. We look forward to seeing the amazing work your students have created this past year. 

  • Prizes: Trophies, certificates, and $500 for category winners
  • Categories: Animation, Documentary/Creative Non-Fiction, Narrative, Short Screenplay

Graphic Design Intern

The College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences is hiring a graphics intern for the 2023-24 school year. The college is looking for the latest addition to its communications team to provide professional-grade designs for print and digital communication pieces. Applicants must have design experience using Adobe Creative Suite from a class or previous employment.

Responsibilities:

  • Work 5-15 hours per week
  • Design flyers, posters, promotional pieces, note cards, advertisements and any other print-based graphics needs for the college.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Reports to: AnnMarie Cornejo, communications director

Skills:

  • Art & Design, Graphic Communication or related major, junior level or higher preferred but not mandatory.
  • Artistic talent with attention to detail.
  • Skilled in Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to follow branding guidelines.
  • Ability to receive an assignment and proceed independently.
  • Ability to accept direction and feedback through constructive critiques.
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines by working independently and collaboratively.
  • Capacity to enthusiastically contribute to a collaborative and creative environment.
  • Discretion and confidentiality.

Music 4 Ants

April 18th

Free Admission!

Cal Poly Music Production Union presents: The Music for Ants Companion Show on April 18th in Chumash auditorium. This is an audiovisual experience about the building of and eventual destruction of an ant colony from the perspective of ants. It begins with a 3-act narrative combining orchestral, ambient, and experimental music, as well as hand & audio-reactive visuals. After that, it moves into several ant-related performances from a wide variety of musicians from all around the west coast.

To submit an event or news item, please email information to Paula Rygg (pyrgg@calpoly.edu), by Friday at 4:00 pm prior. Include title, date and time, participation information (Zoom link, registration, ticketing, fee, etc.), and a brief description. Small – email sized images may be included. Weekly announcements are approved by the chair before they are distributed.
